Week of September 5, 2017

Hello middle school students and families:

The first week of school seems to have gone smoothly: the students seem mostly happy to be back and everyone seems to be ready to work. The 6th graders made a good first impression; I’m looking forward to a fun and productive year with them.

  • We have a student teacher in the middle school this trimester: please welcome Dr. Gregory Crowther to St. John School. Greg is completing his work for 5-12 certification in science through Western Governors University, and comes to us with a long list of accomplishments. He has published several papers in physiology/microbiology, and has been assistant professor at UW Medical School. (I’ve also been told that he’s a very successful, fairly well-known distance runner.) He will be working alongside me in the middle school science classes for the first 12 weeks of school, and will gradually assume more responsibility as he progresses through his student teaching experience. If you have questions, please do not hesitate to contact me. Greg will also introduce himself at the middle school curriculum night.
  • The middle school curriculum night will take place on Thursday, September 21 at 7:00 PM. I look forward to seeing parents there.
  • Students, expect to have a short checkpoint quiz every Friday, starting this week. For all grades, this will involve the nature of science, and for grades 7 and 8, what scientific models are.
  • The Jog a Thon takes place on Friday, September 15! I’m hoping for full participation from everyone, but especially from students in my home room.¬† If we meet our goal of $3500, I’ve told them that I will buy them all pizza and watch a movie with them (Sorry, students, Sharknado¬†is not on the table.)

Have a great week,

Sven Tice
