Week of April 25, 2016

Hello middle school students and families:

  • Third trimester progress reports go home with students on Thursday of this week.
  • The 6th graders will submit their biome projects to me on Tuesday, April 26.
  • The 7th graders took their astronomy tests last Friday, April 22. I cannot return the tests to students until everyone has completed it, but grades have been posted on PowerSchool. Starting on April 25, 7th graders will learn about biological evolution.
  • 8th graders continue to learn about cell processes (osmosis, respiration, photosynthesis, mitosis) this week.
  • 8th graders who are in zero period algebra I will have a test this Friday; it will cover rational expressions/equations.

Have a great week,

Sven Tice

Week of April 18, 2016

Hello middle school students and families:

  • My 7th grade homeroom has a service project on Wednesday, April 20. We will return between 5:30-6:00, depending upon traffic conditions.
  • The 7th graders’ Mars project is officially due on Tuesday, April 19, but, given the difficult nature of the project, I will be happy to evaluate projects as they are completed. (i.e, no penalty for late projects, if they’re completed by the end of April.)
  • The 7th graders have an astronomy test on Friday, April 22.
  • 8th graders continue to work on the structure of cells this week.
  • 6th graders will begin a biome project this week. The majority of the project will be completed during class time.

Science fair projects will be returned to students as I evaluate them. This will take a long time. Each project takes me between 45-60 minutes, and there are 109 of them. Please be patient.

Have a great (apparently sunny) week,

Sven Tice

Week of April 11, 2016

Hello middle school students and families:

Thank you all very much for contributing to a successful 2016 St. John Science Fair.  The students put a huge amount of thought and effort into their projects, and it showed in the quality of their final products. A special thank you is in order for those parents who graciously volunteered to judge the projects, in many cases on very short notice.

Thank you also to the 6th grade parents who drove and chaperoned during the salmon release field trip last week. Almost all the salmon survived, and the trip itself seems to have been a great success.

Here are this week’s announcements//reminders:

  • 8th grade zero period algebra will resume on a normal schedule this week.
  • 7th graders will complete an in-class project on space exploration this week and into next; we’ll take our unit exam on astronomy on Friday, April 22.
  • 8th graders begin their last middle school science unit, on cell biology, this week.
  • 6th graders will begin a project on biomes this week.

Thank you,

Sven Tice

Hello Middle School Families and Students:

Here is the news for this week:

  • 7th and 8th graders, your science displays boards should be brought to school on Tuesday, April 5 for editing. The entire science fair project is due on the date of the science fair, Thursday, April 7.  You need to be in attendance for the duration of the fair, from 1-3 PM and from 7-8:30 PM.
  • The 6th graders will be going to Carkeek Park to release our salmon on Wednesday, April 6. We will leave school at 9:45 and return before the end of the school day. Please dress for inclement weather, and bring a sack lunch and water bottle. Thank you very much to those parents who have agreed to chaperone and/or drive.

Thank you,

Sven Tice
